How to Clean Up an iPhone Camera Roll

Updated 11 September 2026 · Deletely

Photos keeps almost everything you capture in one library. You do not have to scroll that whole grid to clean it up. Start with the collections Photos already makes, merge duplicates, then empty Recently Deleted if you need the space now. You do not need Deletely or any other app to do this.

Start with what Photos already grouped

Screenshots, screen recordings, and videos sit in Media Types. That is faster than hunting through years of photos, and it is where the obvious clutter usually is.

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Tap Collections.
  3. Scroll to Media Types.

On older iOS, look under Albums, then Media Types. Apple’s overview is in Locate photos and videos by media type.

Clear those collections one at a time. Photos does not sort the library by size, so videos have their own path.

Merge duplicates

From iOS 16, Photos can group duplicate photos and videos. Merge keeps the highest-quality version and related data. The extras go to Recently Deleted.

  1. Open Photos, then tap Collections.
  2. Scroll to Utilities and tap Duplicates.
  3. Tap Merge on a set, then confirm. Or tap Select to merge several sets at once.

If Duplicates is missing, the library may still be indexing, or Photos found nothing to group. Indexing needs the iPhone locked and on power. Apple says it can finish quickly, or take a few days. Apple’s steps are in Merge duplicate photos and videos on iPhone and If you can’t find the Duplicates album.

Hiding items is not cleaning up

The library view can hide screenshots, items from a Mac, or items shared with you. That only changes what the grid shows. The files stay, and they still use storage.

  1. Open Photos and go to the library grid.
  2. Tap the sort and filter control, then tap View Options.
  3. Tap Screenshots, From My Mac, or Shared with You to hide those items from this view.

Filter can also show only photos, videos, favorites, or edited items. Use it to review. Then delete what you do not need. Apple documents both in Sort and filter the photo library.

Albums do not free storage

An album is a list of items that already live in your library. Putting a photo in an album does not take it out of the camera roll. Deleting an album does not delete the photos in it. They stay in the library and in any other album they belong to. Apple notes that in Create and work with photo albums.

Organize with albums if you want. To actually clean the roll, you still have to delete items.

Delete from the library when you need to

After the grouped collections, what is left is regular photos: near-duplicates Photos did not merge, blurry shots, and things you kept for later. Photos has no sort-by-size for that grid. Select is the built-in way.

  1. Open Photos and go to the library, or to a collection you still need to thin out.
  2. Tap Select.
  3. Tap items, or slide across the grid to select several.
  4. Tap the trash button, then confirm.

Apple’s delete steps are in Delete photos on your iPhone or iPad. Review before Select All. That control removes everything in the current view.

When storage actually comes back

Deleted items move to Recently Deleted and stay there for 30 days. They still use storage until that period ends, or until you remove them there. That is why an iPhone can still look full after a cleanup. The same point is in the FAQ.

To recover something, or to free the space now:

  1. Open Photos, then tap Collections.
  2. Scroll to Utilities and open Recently Deleted.
  3. Tap View Album if you see it, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  4. Tap Select. Recover what you still need, or choose items to remove for good.
  5. Tap the More button, then Recover, Delete, or Delete All.
  6. If iOS asks, confirm Delete from All Devices, or Delete Photos I Added.

Once you permanently delete from Recently Deleted, those items cannot be restored.

If iCloud Photos is on

A deletion on this iPhone is deleted on every other device where iCloud Photos is on and you are signed in with the same Apple Account. Apple’s iCloud Photos page covers that rule.

If an item sits in an iCloud Shared Photo Library, only the person who added it can permanently delete or recover it from Recently Deleted.

Optimize iPhone Storage is a different setting. It keeps smaller copies on the device and the full files in iCloud. It does not delete your library. Apple explains it in Manage your photo and video storage.

An easier way to review regularly

You do not need another app for a one-time pass. If the roll fills up again, Deletely can group screenshots, screen recordings, old photos, and large videos so they are easier to review. Nothing is preselected. Analysis stays on your iPhone. See Privacy.

When you do delete from Deletely, the items still follow Photos, including Recently Deleted. Deletely cannot recover media for you.
